No matter your age or your status chances are that you have at least one account that has a beneficiary listing of some kind. This could be a bank account, a safety deposit box, an insurance plan, a retirement plan, or something else. When is the last time you reviewed who your beneficiaries are for all of your accounts?
Life changes, whether we want it to or not. There may have been a marriage, a divorce, a birth, a passing, or a relationship change of some other kind. There are stories of ex-spouses that receive benefits that might have been intended for new spouses or other relatives because the beneficiaries on an account were not updated when the relationship status changed. Be aware that a beneficiary listed on an account supersedes the directions in a will.
If you don't want that to happen to your assets, review the beneficiary names listed on all relevant accounts. If you haven't done it lately, within the past few years or after a major life change, you should check what you have listed. If you can't recall the last time that you reviewed your beneficiary listings, then it is past time.
